How to Choose the Right Shade Sail Shape and Size

Top tips for choosing the right shade sail for your own unique space

Shade sails are a stylish and practical way to add shade and shelter to your garden. They can transform patios, seating areas and outdoor spaces while providing protection from both strong sun and unexpected summer showers.

However, many customers ask the same questions before buying:

  • Which shape shade sail should I choose?
  • What size shade sail do I need?
  • Will a standard sail fit my space?

This guide will help you understand the differences between triangle, square and rectangle shade sails, as well as when a made-to-measure sail may be the best option.

Before we dive in here is a quick starting point summary

 Shape Best For

Triangle

Small spaces, creative layouts or where fixings points are limited.  Small roof spaces in conservatories

Square

Patio tables, balanced coverage. Pergolas, conservatories and event spaces

Rectangle

Large patios and long seating areas. Pergolas, conservatories and event spaces.

Made to Measure

Awkward or irregular spaces, unusual sizes. Commercial orders.

Which shade sail shape should I choose?

The shape you choose often depends on the space you want to shade and the available fixing points.

Triangle Shade Sails

Triangle shade sails are one of the most popular and flexible options.  Three-corner design makes them ideal for smaller spaces or areas where you may not have four strong fixing points available.

Triangle sails also allow for creative installations and can be combined with additional sails to create layered or overlapping shade.

They are a top seller for conservatories and roof lanterns as they work perfectly within the rafters of the conservatory roofline, or if you just want your conservatory part shaded.

  • Architectural spaces
  • Schools, nurseries, animal farms
  • Events, restaurants and bars

They are also a great option where buildings, fences or trees naturally create three fixing points.

What size shade sail do I need?

Once you have chosen the shape, the next step is deciding which size sail will work best for your space.

When installing a shade sail, it is important to remember that the sail should be slightly smaller than the area you want to shade. This allows space for the fixing hardware and ensures the sail can be properly tensioned.

As a general guide, allow 20–40cm between each corner of the sail and the fixing point.

Before you install, we recommend you have a good read through our installation guide, all the information and advice you need can be found here.

Common Mistakes When Choosing a Shade Sail

All these can be avoided by reading our installation guide.

Choosing a sail that is too large

Shade sails need space for tensioning hardware. Always allow around 20–40 cm between each corner and the fixing point.

Installing the sail completely flat

Sails should normally be installed at a slight angle so rainwater can run off easily.

Not considering the position of the sun

Think about when you use your garden most. Position the sail so it blocks the strongest afternoon sun.  This blog is great at explaining this further

Not measuring fixing points first

Before choosing a sail size, measure the distance between walls, posts or fixing points.

Final Tips for Choosing the Right Shade Sail

Before selecting your sail, consider the following:

• Where your fixing points will be located
• The size of the space you want to shade
• The height and angle of installation
• Whether a standard size or custom sail will work best

Installing your sail at a slight angle will also help rainwater run off more effectively.
